American Association of Crimean Turks, Inc. (hereafter, Association) is a New York State registered non profit organization located in Brooklyn, New York, USA. The certificate of incorporation pursuant to the membership corporation by-laws of the State of New York filed with the New York State Secretary of State on November 22, 1961. It is registered as a 50 1 c 3 organization of the Internal Revenue Code. It is a cultural organization and not a political organization. It is comprised of approximately 500 members not including spouses and their children. It is considered the largest member based Crimean Turks/Tatar organization of its kind in the United States. The original founders of the Association were the survivors of the May 18, 1944 deportation known as Surgun by the former Stalin Soviet communist regime. Its current members are comprised of second and third generation Crimean Turk/Tatars combined with recent Crimean Tatar arrivals from Romania, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. Also included in Association member group are the Crimean Turk/Tatars from Eskisehir, Turkey. Lastly, we are also proud of our first and generation Crimean Turk/Tatars who were born in USA as our Youth members.
The Association organization structure consists of President, Vice President, second Vice President (optional), Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, and an Auditing Committee and Disciplinary Committee. The Association holds annual elections on all of the respective bodies.
In accordance with The Association mission the Ismail Gaspirali School, named after the renowned Crimean Tatar intellectual, educator, publisher and founder of Tercuman in 18813. The School teaches indigenous Crimean Tatar language, folk and traditional dance classes, arts and craft as well as modern Turkish language class.
The Association has a vibrant Women’s Auxiliary who organizes all organization events, and traditional religious activities. The Association serves an operational role on selected activities of the Crimean Turks Mosque.
The Association has a Youth Group that has been historically active in sport activities and current activities comprise of involvement in community services.
The Association added in 2010 an Advocacy body to its organization structure. This work is undertaken to further the mission goals of the organization and build its network and capacity while drawing
